A good portion of the trailers we have transformed and customized at Pioneer Vintage Trailer have been from the 1960's. That was 50 years ago when Ed Sullivan was on the black and white TV and America was working on putting a man on the moon.
Airstreams outlive most every other trailer out there. The typical life span for a regular camper is only 15 years. 70% of all Airstreams ever made are still titled and on the road. From an investment standpoint, chrome twinkies are pretty good!
Patching old holes
Many small and larger holes can be patched with a piece of aluminum riveted in place. Sometimes it may be a puncture or even an old access door that is no longer needed. What makes an Airstream neater than it already is? More rivets!
Once the trailer is polished, the new panels will blend right in with the rest of the trailer and will actually look like they belong there.
For small holes, a rivet head may be big enough to cover the hole. Here, rivets fill holes where a bracket used to reside.
Patches don't really take away from the beauty of an Airstream. Some may argue that they actually add interest to an otherwise flat surface.
PVT has also dressed up the occasional cover with a unique patch design of our own - a Pioneer Vintage Trailer star. Our star adds a bit of whimsey to an otherwise drab square patch.
Panel Replacement
Sometimes your jeans need a patch on the knee.
Seriously dented, scratched or corroded panels are replaced. But there are some panels with minor scratches or flaws that, because of project budget, are not replaced. These 'age marks' are what gives the trailer character and pays tribute to its full past life.
It's all about the rivets
An average of 3000 rivets were originally used to create each Airstream trailer. Those round aluminum rivets are what makes and Airstream an Airsteam. It's also the reason we love them so.
Comfortable
At the end of the day, it's either all about sales or all about relaxing with your trailer knowing you are preserving a legend. Are you happy with the new prospects your Airstream brought in? Is your food sales doing great because they wanted to come closer and check out your wonderful chrome twinkie - wishing they had one of their own. Maybe it's just the looks you get when going down the highway when pulling it.
Either way it brings a smile to your face. Vintage Airstreams are comfortable like an old pair of jeans.
